Replacing a KoolR Magnum with a Wine-R WR2500

A Wine-R WR2500 is designed to fit the standard opening used by a KoolR Magnum, but I would never approve the replacement from that measurement alone. I also want the cellar dimensions, insulation, glass, door seals, warm-side conditions, electrical circuit, and drainage route. The existing opening may save work. The room still decides whether the WR2500 is suitable.

When someone sends us a photograph of a KoolR Magnum that is no longer holding temperature, my eyes rarely stay on the unit for long.

I look at the trim around it. I look below it for racking or cabinetry that may interfere with removal. Then I try to understand what is happening on the other side of the wall, where the equipment releases the heat taken from the cellar.

The opening matters. It represents framing, electrical work, finishing, and a place already reserved for cooling equipment.

But an old opening is evidence of a previous installation. It is not approval for the next one.

Kvsche carries the Wine-R WR2500, a through-the-wall cooling unit intended for properly insulated and sealed wine rooms. Wine-R identifies it as compatible with the standard opening used by the KoolR Magnum.

That compatibility can preserve useful parts of the original installation. Before relying on it, I want to read the room from both sides.

The existing opening is an advantage, not a verdict

The first measurement is still the wall opening.

Wine-R currently identifies the standard KoolR Magnum opening as approximately 15 3/4 inches wide by 9 3/4 inches high. The current WR2500 above-door cutout is listed as 15 5/8 inches wide by 9 1/4 inches high. Its mounting arrangement is designed to work with the standard KoolR opening.

Those figures do not mean every existing installation is identical.

A decorative frame may hide the actual edge. Drywall may have been added during a renovation. A previous installer may have adjusted the framing, packed out one side, or routed conduit closer to the opening than expected.

I would measure the rough opening at the wall rather than measuring the face of the old unit. Record:

  • Opening width at the top, middle, and bottom
  • Opening height at the left, centre, and right
  • Finished wall thickness
  • Nearby studs, blocking, wiring, or conduit
  • Space available on the cellar side
  • Space available on the warm side

If trim prevents an accurate measurement, photograph it closely and show the entire wall as well. We need to understand what is structural, what is decorative, and what may have to change.

I photograph both sides before removing the old unit

A close photograph of the KoolR label is useful. It is not enough to understand the installation.

I ask for one photograph taken from well inside the cellar, with the full wall visible. This shows the relationship between the unit, ceiling, racking, lighting, door, and surrounding finishes.

Then I ask for the same kind of photograph from the warm side.

That second image often reveals more than expected. Storage boxes may have collected below the exhaust. A shelf may have been added after the cellar was built. Cabinetry may now sit closer to the unit. A utility room that once had open air may have become crowded with household equipment.

The WR2500 moves heat from the enclosed cellar into an appropriate adjacent interior space. Its intake and discharge areas must remain unobstructed, and the rear cannot be enclosed inside a tight cabinet.

I want to see that space as it exists on an ordinary day, not after everything has been moved out of the photograph.

The cellar may have changed since the KoolR was installed

Sometimes the equipment reaches the end of its service life. Sometimes the room has also become harder to cool.

A glass door may have replaced a solid one. Weather seals can compress. New lighting may introduce heat. An opening for wiring can interrupt the enclosure. Racking, cases, or furniture can move closer to the airflow path.

Even a cellar that once performed well deserves a fresh review before new equipment is selected.

I look for:

  • Continuous insulation in the walls and ceiling
  • A sealed door with intact weather stripping
  • Visible gaps around lighting, wiring, conduit, and trim
  • Changes to the room dimensions
  • Glass that was added or replaced
  • Direct sunlight or another source of heat
  • Racking or stored cases restricting airflow

Wine-R’s current sizing guidance assumes an appropriately sealed enclosure with at least R-20 insulation. Glazed applications require insulated double-pane or insulated glass units and effective seals.

These are requirements for evaluating the WR2500. They should not be treated as a claim that the original KoolR installation was built to the same current standard.

A new unit replaces equipment. It does not repair the room around it.

Opening compatibility and cooling suitability are different checks

A WR2500 can fit physically and still be unsuitable for the cooling load.

Measure the finished interior length, width, and height of the cellar. Multiplying those measurements gives the starting room volume:

Length x width x height = room volume

Wine-R’s current sizing material lists the WR2500 for properly constructed cellars up to 700 cubic feet when glass is involved and up to 900 cubic feet for fully enclosed conditions. Those figures depend on the stated insulation, sealing, glass, and installation assumptions.

I treat them as limits for review, not permission to skip the review.

A solid, insulated room and a heavily glazed room can have the same cubic footage while placing very different loads on the cooling system. Door leakage, warm-side conditions, lighting, and direct exposure can change the result again.

Glass needs dimensions, not a description

When someone tells us the cellar has “a little glass,” I still need a tape measure.

A glazed door is different from a full-height wall. A narrow sidelight is different from a room visible through glass on three sides. Afternoon sunlight can make two otherwise similar installations behave differently.

For every glass surface, record:

  • Width and height
  • Single-pane, double-pane, or insulated glass construction
  • Door type and sealing condition
  • Direct sun exposure
  • The room and typical temperature on the other side

Do not rely on a photograph to identify the glass specification. If the construction is unknown, mark it as unknown and investigate it before treating the room as suitable.

The glass can remain an important part of the architecture. The cooling calculation simply has to see the same glass that the room does.

Electrical and drainage must be traced, not assumed

An existing outlet beside the KoolR is encouraging. It does not confirm that the circuit meets the WR2500 requirements.

The WR2500 requires a grounded, dedicated 115V, 60Hz, 15A circuit. If the circuit history is unclear, a qualified electrician should confirm it. The outlet should not be shared with other equipment, controlled by a wall switch, or reached through an extension cord.

The unit and electrical connection also need to remain accessible. Permanent millwork should not turn routine service into demolition.

Drainage deserves the same attention.

The WR2500 requires a condensate drain. If a drain already exists, trace it from the unit to its discharge point. Confirm that it remains clear, accessible, and able to follow the current installation requirements.

Wine-R calls for the unit to sit level and for the drain line to maintain a gentle, continuous downward path without kinks or upward loops. Where gravity drainage is not practical, a qualified installer may need to plan a condensate pump and suitable discharge point.

I do not count a pipe disappearing into a finished wall as a confirmed drainage plan.

The visible face of the unit will change

The wall opening may remain, but the object seen from inside the cellar will be different.

The WR2500 fascia does not match the face of the KoolR Magnum. Tight custom trim, ceiling details, or millwork built around the old unit may need adjustment.

Before removing anything, photograph the cellar wall straight on. Measure the old trim and note how it aligns with the racking, door, ceiling, and nearby lighting.

I prefer to make the new fascia look intentional rather than forcing an almost-fitting piece of old trim around it. Sometimes that means a revised frame. Sometimes it means allowing the manufacturer’s fascia to sit cleanly against the wall with a restrained shadow line.

This is a small part of the mechanical decision, but it is the part the room will continue to see.

Diagnose the KoolR before deciding to replace it

A cellar drifting above its set temperature does not prove that the compressor has failed.

Restricted airflow, ice, blocked drainage, damaged door seals, unsuitable room conditions, sensor problems, or electrical issues can create similar symptoms. A qualified refrigeration technician should inspect the existing equipment before the cause is assumed.

Repair may remain reasonable when the fault is limited, the unit is relatively recent, or applicable warranty support is available.

Replacement may become more practical when the failure is confirmed, repair is not economical, or the necessary parts and support are no longer available.

Kvsche cannot diagnose the KoolR from a photograph. What we can do is organize the room information needed to evaluate whether the WR2500 belongs in the existing installation after the original problem has been assessed.

What to send us before choosing the WR2500

Existing opening Rough width, rough height, wall thickness, and nearby framing or conduit

Room envelope Known insulation, vapour-control details, door condition, and visible penetrations
Cellar-side photographs Full wall, existing unit, nearby racking, lighting, trim, and door
Warm-side photographs Full adjacent space, intake and exhaust area, shelving, cabinets, and stored objects
Electrical Outlet location and confirmation of a grounded, dedicated circuit
Drainage Existing route, discharge point, available slope, and maintenance access
Existing KoolR Model, serial number, approximate age, symptoms, and technician’s findings when available

Take the wide photographs before moving boxes, shelves, or furniture. We want to understand the room as it is normally used. Add close photographs afterward for the opening, outlet, drain, labels, and trim.

Once I can trace the opening, enclosure, airflow, electrical supply, and drainage through those photographs, the replacement stops being a guess based on one hole in the wall.

The Wine-R WR2500 provides a practical replacement path for many standard KoolR Magnum installations. The existing opening and parts of the original room construction may remain useful.

We still let the whole room approve the replacement.
